To configure Apple Mail please follow the instructions below. This article was written for Apple Mail 3.0 which comes preinstalled with Apple OS 10.5.

1. Click on the Mail icon in your dock. If this is your first time using Mail you will be asked to create a new account. If you already have an account configured in Apple Mail navigate to Mail --> Preferences --> Accounts and click the green + sign to add a new account.

2. Enter the following information:

Full name: This is the name displayed when sending email.

Email Address: The email address you are configuring from your GearHost account.

Password: The password to the email address you are configuring.

3. Click on continue and enter the following information for the incoming mail server:

Account Type:

IMAP: IMAP protocol is used to read the email from the server without downloading it. This is much like reading the email online through a web browser, but instead you are doing this through Apple Mail. This will leave all the messages on the server and allow you to access them online through webmail on another computer. If you wish to access your email from multiple computers chose this option.

POP3: This is the most common account type. This will download all email from the server and store it locally on your computer. This will mean that the email will only be accessible from the computer configured to retrieve </SP

Setting up Outlook 2003

Abstract:
The following illustrates how to setup your email using Microsoft Outlook.

More information about Outlook go to http://www.microsoft.com/office/outlook/.

1 Create your email mailbox within the control panel. This means that on one server, all sites share these 50 connections. On a shared server, occasionally the drivers that support Access may become unavailable due to other web sites using them. Unfortunately, Access was made by Microsoft to be used as a testing database by only one website. If you would like to greatly improve database stability in a shared environment, use a MY SQL or MS SQL database.

MySQL and MSSQL support a lot more than 50 concurrent connections and were made for a production environment. Microsoft Access was designed as a single-user desktop database, and not for server use. Macromedia has also restated Microsoft's statement. SQL Server is recommended and developed specifically for the production environment.

Statement from Microsoft:

"Microsoft Access was not designed for server use. When multiple, concurrent
users make requests of a Microsoft Access database, unpredictable results may
occur."

This isn't to say Access cannot be used, it can for lower traffic websites. On sites that do not receive a lot of concurrent visitors you will not notice a performance difference bewteen SQL and Access.

ASPMail

Abstract:
Complete documentation can be found here:

http://www.serverobjects.com/comp/Aspmail4.htm

If ASPMail is set up, but it is returning the error "550 - Not LocalHost Not a Gateway", the "FromAddress" variable must be set to a local address. For example, if your domain name is "abc.com," Your FromAddress must be YOURUSERNAME@abc.com.

The address must be a valid user as well, not an alias. Without any workstation computer setup, you can login and start sending and receiving email messages. Email web interfaces were made popular with different brands such as AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail and more. However, each one has been created differently by diverse groups of developers and communities. Therefore, they have slightly different options, naming conventions and strengths during interactivity. However, they are all used to accomplish the same goal, to effectively send and receive email messages to numerous contacts online using a web browser.

You can access any GearHost email account via the web by simply going to mail.example.com where example.com is your own hosted domain name. This will bring up a login page that asks for your email address and password. Once logged in you will be able to send, receive, and view mail that is still on your account on the server.

Please note that the web interface will not work as intended until twenty four hours after a successful domain name registration change or update. Also, it is not recommended to use the email web interface in combination with any other method of checking for email, such as POP or IMAP which may already be setup on an existing personal computer or laptop. The use of such combination may result in a perceived loss in messages or confusion. You can use the email web interface from any number of computers with a compatible web browser, such as the Internet Explorer (IE) Firefox or Navigator.

Test your website without a domain name

Abstract:
You can test your website without a domain name by using your IP address. The first thing to do is find out what the IP address is for your account. Each account with GearHost has one unique dedicated IP address. You can find the IP address in your account confirmation email you receive after signing up the account or you can find it in the control panel. To view the IP in GearPanel login at www.gearpanel.com and look on the right hand side under your account information.

Once you know your IP address all you have to do is type it in a web browser. Rebooting the server this way will kill any stuck or hung processes and services that can prevent the server from rebooting normally. When this happens the server will still be online and in most cases serving web pages and running fine, except that remote desktop (RDP or Terminal Services) is not available. This will prevent you from being able to login to force a shut down. Please follow the instructions below to force your server to reboot.

1. Click on the start menu and then click on run.

2. Type "shutdown /r" without the "" and hit enter.

3. A message will appear indicating that your server will reboot in 30 seconds. The server will automatically log you off and reboot.

You can monitor the reboot process by running a continuous ping on the server. Please follow the instructions below.

1. From your computer click on the start menu and then click on run.

2. Type "ping [server name or IP] -t" without the "" and replace [server name] with your domain name or type in the IP. IE 69.24.64.80 (which is the IP address for gearhost.com)

3. A command prompt window will appear and begin running a continuous ping on the IP or server name. You will see the message "request timeout" when the server is actually rebooting. The server will ping back a response for a few minutes before becoming unavailable. You may get time out for few minutes as well. During this time the server will post from BIOS, check RAM, disk, RAID arrays, etc which can take a few minutes. The ping will look similar to the following.

Reply from 69.24.65.58: bytes=32 time=14ms TTL=126
Reply from 69.24.65.58: bytes=32 time=13ms TTL=126
Reply from 69.24.65.58: bytes=32 time=4ms TTL=126
Reply from 69.24.65.58: bytes=32 time=4ms TTL=126

Setting Up Windows Mail (Microsoft Windows Vista)

Abstract:
Setting Up Windows Mail (Microsoft Windows Vista)

1. In the Open box, type cmd, and click OK.

3. At the command prompt, type iisreset /stop. IIS will attempt to stop all services and will return confirmation once all services have been stopped.

4. At the command prompt, type iisreset /start.

5. That’s it!
